Notes for Charles C. Austin as compiled by Alan Miller:

Charles Austin was born March 26, 1796 in rural Anson County, North Carolina in a community called Austinville. He was the first son of Richard Austin and Sarah Morgan of North Carolina. He married Phoebe Ellen Woodward at a location near Charlootte, North Carolina. Five of their children were born in North Carolina, and they all moved to Henderson County Tennessee around September or October 1825 just west of present day town of Scotts Hill. Charles built a large house of yellow poplar logs for his large family. They had seven more children after the move to the Scotts Hill area and also reared two or more orphaned nephews and/or nieces in the same residence. Charles was the first settler to settle in the Scotts Hill area.

According to family history, Charles came with a few other men probably neighbors from North Carolina in the early 1820's to scout out the land and locate places to build homes for their families before going back to bring their families back to settle in 1825 to build cabins for their families before cold weather came. Gordon Turner, Sr. wrote that Charles Austin's holding of more than 2500 acres came partly from seven grants from four Tennessee governors and by transfer of land granted to his father Richard Austin of North Carolina. His first wife Phoebe Ellen was the first to be buried in the cemetery located on the farm in 1854 and became known as the Granny Austin Graveyard. Charles was buried beside her in 1875.

Those who traveled the route westward came in wagons, two-wheel carts, by horseback, and afoot making the journey in about six weeks. The likely route was probably an overland route through Charlotte, Asheville and Warm Springs (now called Hot Springs) in North Carolina. They crossed the Appalachian Mountains by following the French Broad River gap into Tennessee by way of Dandridge, Knoxville, Kingston, through the Cumberland Mountains at Crossville, Sparta, McMinnville, probably soututhwestward to Pulaski or Columbia, possibly following the Natchez Trace for a short distance in the vicinity of Waynesboro, crossing the Tennessee River at Carrollsville near present day Clifton. The remaining twenty miles was probably uncharted dense woods where deer, bear, and much small game lived.

He was a tall, large-framed man, and he quickly built a log cabin for his family about one and a half miles southwest of the present day Scotts Hill, Tennessee. He homesteaded about thirteen hundred acres of land west of present day Scotts Hill, Tennessee. Others came in a few years after his arrival including his brothers Morgan, James and Jeremiah moved to the Scotts Hill area and settled.

Charles served as a Justice of the Peace in Scotts Hill and farmed his large acreage with the help of his large family. His land was divided up numerous times when his children married and was passed down to his descendants. Some of the land is still owned by his descendants who were many.
